This Cardinal has been literally on the front lines, on foot, undergoing physical attack and risking his life to rescue students trapped in a church by violent pro-Sandinista militias in Nicaragua. Hundreds have been killed in the protests while the bishops have tried mightily to arbitrate peace. They have given up because of the refusal of the government to participate and to restrain the militias.
